Private Mailing Lists (Subscription Only)
College staff may create private mailing lists to facilitate their work as a member of staff of Trinity College.
Each list will have one or two people responsible for the administration of the list. This is the list owner. The list owner will see that the list runs smoothly, provide any necessary information files and answer questions from members. Some lists are open to anyone to subscribe to whereas others are 'closed', in which case the list owner will usually invite selected individuals to join the list and add them manually.
The private mailing lists on are managed by dedicated Mailing List Manager (MLM) software. The main functions of the Mailing List Manager software are the automated processing of subscriptions and the distribution of messages.
Creating a Private Mailing List
If All Members Are Registered College Users
If the private mailing list is to involve College users only then fill in the local mailing list request form. The details will be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org and a member of IS Services will deal with the request. The Mailing List Manager (MLM) software for these lists is Majordomo.
If Members Include Non College Users
If the private mailing list is to involve people outside College, you must create a mailing list on the HEAnet list server. The Mailing List Manager (MLM) software for these lists is LISTSERV. First refer to the acceptable usage policy for full information and then fill in the new LISTSERV list request form. It is also advisable to read the listowner's manual. The form should be sent to email@example.com.
Subscribing To And Unsubscribing From Private Mailing Lists
Email a 'subscribe' or 'unsubscribe' request to the appropraite Mailing List Manager (MLM), firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com. If successful, your email address will be added to or removed from the list of subscribers as appropriate. Please ensure your 'return address' is configured accurately in your email client as this is the email address that the MLM will use.
The exact form of the subscribe or unsubscribe request varies slightly depending on which Mailing List Manager (MLM) is being used. However both MLM's respond to an initial 'help' email which will give you guidance. Simply email firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com with the following information in the main body of your email:
'end' makes sure your signature doesn't confuse the MLM.
Sometimes you might need to submit a request which won't fit on one line of your email. If you want to break it up, put a backslash '\' at the end of the first line:
subscribe very-long-name-of-discussion-list \
