College computer rooms - software request guidance notes
Requests for installation of software in College computer rooms, seminar rooms and lecture theatres are only accepted from members of College staff by submitting the online software request form. After submitting your software request, you will be brought to a web page containing the information you submitted. Please read this page to verify that your form was filled out properly. You may wish to print a copy of your software request. Your request will be processed by the IS Services Helpdesk and a ticket number assigned. A member of IS Services staff will be subsequently in contact with you.
It should be assumed that all software is to be installed for a period of one Academic year. All previously requested software will need to be reviewed annually to determine continued support.
Current software list
You may find is useful to refer to the current current software list (XLS) prior to submitting your request. There is no need to request standard software such as MS Office, SPSS or ArcGIS, as these software applications are available on all computers by default.
No unlicensed software, trial or beta software will be installed on College computer room computers. Not all software can be funded by IS Services. Staff may be required to fund the purchase of currently unlicenced software.
Request deadline & testing
The deadline for submitting your software request is Friday, 21st June, 2013. This deadline will allow IS Services sufficient time to license, install and configure software and to provide an opportunity for you, or a nominated person, to test software to ensure proper installation, functionality and customisation. This process includes:
- verifying the licensing for the applications
- installing the applications
- configuring the applications
- testing the whole suite of applications together
- arranging for staff to test the functionality of their applications and sign-off
- possible modifications to the application build, retesting and sign-off
- deploying the final build of applications to all the machines in the College computer rooms before the Michaelmas term
When the software has been installed by IS Services, it will need to be tested thoroughly to ensure that all components are available and working as required and signed off by two nominated people. Staff nominated must make themselves available to test requested software as IS Services will not deploy the software in the Computer rooms if it is not tested.
Once all software is signed-off to the satisfaction of those who requested it, it will be incorporated into workstation images and rolled out to the appropriate locations. Workstation images will remain unchanged during term-time to preserve correct working of all the software installed on the build.
It is envisaged that software testing for academic year 2013/2014 will commence in late July 2013 and will take place in Ham 4 (Hamilton/ORI); for the location of these rooms please see the College computer room map.
If you have a query regarding software for Lecture Theatres, Seminar Rooms and College Computer Rooms for Academic Year 2012-2013 then please contact the IS Services Helpdesk.
