Internet access method - TCDconnect
If you connect to the wireless network then you do not have to provide any additional authentication beyond your wireless network login credentials, which are usually saved on your computer. This means that once you are connected to the TCDconnect Wi-Fi network there are no additional steps to take in order to gain external internet access.
Those TCDconnect users who connected to the wired network in College residences need to carry out the steps below in order to gain internet access. In brief, you will need to launch a web browser, authenticate and then leave a 'keep-alive' web page open, as described in detail below.
In addition to the steps below you may find it useful to view our video illustrating the process.
- Launch a web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari
- Browse to a website external to College such as www.bbc.co.uk. This step is not necessary if your web browser home page is a non-College web page.
- On first attempting to access a web page external to College you will be brought to an Authentication Required web page - enter your College username and network login password and click Log On, as seen in Fig. 1 below, in order to gain access to external internet resources.
- You be then be presented with a 'keep-alive' web page which must be left open in order to maintain external internet access for all internet services, not just for accessing external websites, as seen in Fig. 2 below. This includes applications such as Skype and Dropbox. To continue browsing the web it is then necessary to either open a new browser window or new tab, do not enter your destination URL into this tab or window.
