Guest Wireless Internet Access Service

This service allows visiting, short-term, authorised College guests to connect their personal computer to the internet via the College wireless network. This guest service is not available for the College 'wired' network. This service is not intended for use by registered College staff and students; such users should make use of the staff wireless network or student wireless network as appropriate.

Function of Guest Wireless Internet Access Service

To facilitate the connection of authorised short term College guests who require access to the internet, for example internet browsing, internet-based email and other internet enabled applications from their personal laptops via the College guest wireless network during their stay in Trinity College.

The service does not facilitate access to the internal Trinity College network. The allocated username and password is not a College computer account and does not enable access to computers or services on the College network (other than services accessible from the internet, for example college web server).

Entitlement to Guest Wireless Internet Access Service

Official guests of College who are not entitled to standard computer accounts but who have a requirement for internet access to support their College related work during their stay in College.

Duration of Access to Guest Wireless Internet Access Service

This service is available to a College guest for a duration of up to 28 consecutive days maximum. Academics visiting College for extended periods may be entitled to standard computer accounts. Please consult with departmental contact.

Requesting Access to Guest Wireless Internet Access Service

An authorising party (AP) takes responsibility for requesting a username and password for the wireless guest service on behalf of the visiting academic/non-academic guest, by completing the online guest wireless access request form. Please contact the IS Services Helpdesk if you need to confirm who is the Authorising Party for your department. It is important that the Authorising Party is fully aware of and agrees to take responsibility for the network activity undertaken by their guest. See Guest Wireless Internet Access Service Terms and Conditions of Use (PDF, 200KB).

Request Procedure

Within 2 working days of receiving a request via the online guest wireless access request form IS Services will send an email to the Authorising Party which will include:

  1. The newly generated username(s) and password(s) for accessing the guest wireless service
  2. A web link to the sign-out sheet with all the relevant fields to be completed which includes the Authorising party and visiting guest signing against their allocated username and password (this will act as an audit trail for IS Services). This sign-out sheet must be returned in an enclosed envelope to David Farrell, IS Services, 200/201 Pearse Street, TCD
  3. A web link to the instructions on how the guest configures their computer to be able to login to the wireless guest service, using the allocated username and password. These instructions should be printed out by the Authorising Party and given to the guest, along with the allocated username and password, which should be retained by the guest.

Configuration Steps

Within 2 working days of the Authorising Party submitting the guest wireless access request form they will be sent an email linking to the appropriate configuration instructions, as can be found below. The guest has to perform a small number of configuration steps in order to connect to the wireless guest service, before then launching their web browser e.g. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Safari.

Once the guest attempts to go to any non-TCD website, the guest wireless service login webpage will display. The guest must enter the username and password allocated to them and click the relevant button to accept the terms and conditions of the service, and hence login, thus gaining internet access. It is important that the guest retain the username and password as they may be subsequently asked to login to the wireless guest service during their time in College.

If you have any further queries regarding the guest wireless internet access service, please contact the IS Services Helpdesk
