Stinger Removal Tool
Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist users when dealing with an infected system.
Some viruses disable anti-virus software and so Stinger can be used as an alternative method of detecting specific threats.
If you believe your PC is infected with a virus, and you have not been able to remove it using VirusScan, then you should download Stinger and run it on your system. Note that you must be using Internet Explorer and be connected to the College network to download Stinger as it is hosted on an internal College server. The version of Stinger and release date is displayed on the first line of text in the main stinger window.
To configure Stinger click on the preferences button from the menu bar and ensure that the following boxes are ticked in addition to the default ones.
- Scan these targets: Processes
- Boot sectors
- On Virus Detection: Repair
- Detection: Scan All Files.
Stinger is configured to scan your C:\ drive only by default. To add addition fixed drives to the list to scan, click on the ADD button and type in the label of the fixed drive e.g. D:\
To scan a drive – highlight it in the Directories to Scan window and click on the Scan button.
When the scan is complete a summary report is displayed.
